Pitting Caused By Rust
A customer discovered pitting caused by rust along the top edge of an injection mold that was held in storage for awhile.
Here's How We Helped Them
Repair Step 1: Each pit was laser welded by the customer as pictured above.
Repair Step 2: Bring the welds down to match the original surface height and finish.
1. The laser weld spots are very hard with a rockwell of about 55. Theses small hard spots can be very difficult to sand down and polish with normal aluminum oxide, silicon carbide or zirconia abrasives. Additionally the rest of the surface cannot be touched.
2. Use a profiler tool for working on small spots such as our most popular Ultra Lap, UTR-70.
3. Use a CNB Stone designed to remove welds on hardened steel.
4. Use a Diamond Super Stone that can do the final finish on the welds to match up to the old surface.
5. Use a Diamond Compound applied on a Cotton Buff to match the final surface finish.
